Mathew Long2 Simpson (1784-1831)
(Hugh1 Simpson)
Mathew L. Simpson, son of Hugh
Simpson and Mary Ann Long, was born 22
November 1784 in Ninety-six District, SC. Mathew was apparently
named after his maternal grandfather, Mathew Long but I am unable to verify
this possibility.
Mathew is probably listed in the
household of Hugh Simpson enumerated in the 1790 federal census of Pendleton
Co., SC.

A deed recorded 4 July 1818 in the Warren
County deed book I-9 shows Mathew
bought 38 acres, beginning on the east bank of Gaspers
River near the mouth of Hall’s
Branch from Elizabeth Butler (possible mother of Elizabeth, wife of brother,
John) for $250. Another deed recorded 15
January 1819 showed that Matthew bought 1¾ acres of land where his
current dwelling house is located from Elizabeth Butler for $550.
But a deed recorded 12 October 1819 shows Mathew sold 38
acres of land to his brother-in-law, William C. Maxey, for $300. And finally,
another deed recorded 16 October 1819
shows Mathew sold 1¾ acres sold to Miller Wood.
Probably between the years of
1819 and 1829, the family moved and settled into Upper Twp., Crawford Co., AR. as
Mathew is listed on the 1829 tax list of Upper Township, Crawford Co., AR.
The household of Mathew Simpson
is enumerated in the 1830 federal census of Upper Township of Crawford Co., Arkansas
Territory .
